  • Good Question, the Wonderworker

While making their way through Roundrock, the party ran into two interesting people - the young man Sorvald, a thief who had recently definitely not run away from home, and Good Question, a Nobirian Wonderworker, servant of Coyote. Having heard of their exploits, the two newcomers were interested in joining the party. The Nobirian happened to own a map, which she happily offered to share; Caranthir, his dragon-like greed bubbling to the surface, offered to fly the two of them to the site of the treasure, while the rest of the party, fueled by Gróin's pleading, headed to the Mareten Wall to buy some more of those amazing mini-potions.

Gróin and friends encountered little difficulty - no more than a single giant weasel, who wished Rig a god day and left them unmolested.

Caranthir and GQ, however... theirs was a different story.

They flew over a group of white apes, and soon made their way to the site of the treasure. There, buried in a fairy ring, was a small wooden box, and inside, a pair of shoes! GQ, hovering on her flying carpet, landed and carefully tried on the shoes. She found that her steps were softened, and deduced that the shoes were Elven. Unfortunately... that's when the creature who had been sleeping in the woods next to them decided to charge. A hydra, eight heads darting forward, breathed a gout of flame at the two unsuspecting travelers! GC passed out from the blaze, and Caranthir was hurting. He swung his frost-blade at the creature, dealing a mighty blow and severing two of its heads; the hydra flailed madly, breathing another gout of flame, but not managing to land any attacks. It pressed forward, but Caranthir finally defeated it (as a note - I miscalculated the hit points, it should have had a lot more than that. Hydras are bad news).

Quickly, he poured a potion of Restore Life and Limb down the throat of the unconscious GQ, but it was no use. Remembering the Grek Trieb was nearby, he gathered his fr- his new acquaintance, and flew to their camp. The tribe was pleased to see him, and all too happy to lend their aid. The shaman performed a ritual, bringing GC back into a new body - one that was male, and also less hardy than before. Caranthir, not wishing to be burdened with such a weakling, stabbed the newly-reborn Nobiran in the chest, and asked the shaman to try again.

And again. And... again. Finally, the frustrated shaman declared this the last attempt, and brought the poor creature back as a pixie. I'll add the details of this new hybrid class below.

Finally, it was time to return. With the pixie flying on her carpet, and Caranthir leading the way in dragon-form, they made it to the wall the day before the festivities of Guards' Day. Caranthir, not wanting to go through the boring lines associated with the Gate, flew straight to the tower (and found another Hydra, drive-by fireballing it on the way).

The Wall of Mareten is no simple wall. It's 100 feet tall, and a mile thick; what's more, it's laced with magical wards and spells, wrought by powerful mages. On top of all that, it's magically bonded with Mareten Tower, and reinforced with its ancient strength.

Caranthir... didn't really care. Ignoring the amassing guards, he flew to an open area of the wall. As he passed over its boundary, a sudden surge of electrical power enveloped his body! His muscles froze, and he crashed to the wall, skidding to a stop as a dozen spears leveled at him (as a minor note - 10d8 may not seem like a lot of damage to a high-level hero, but an average damage of 45 is enough to take out most creatures, many dragons included).

GQ, a scant few inches behind him, only just managed to pull up and stop. The tip of Caranthir's tail hung over the edge, and GQ cast Cure Light Wounds to relieve him of the holding spell. Still, Caranthir was in no great shape... After some heated discussion, the rest of the party (who had made it to the tower) arrived and bailed him out. GQ revealed herself, and with the assistance of several high-level spells (four level 6, two level 5, and a level 4, to be precise), managed to cross the wall and land unscathed.

  • Experience from treasure: none
  • Experience from encounters:
    • 8 headed fire-breathing hydra (1600)
    • 8 headed normal hydra (1100)
  • Total experience: 2700
  • XP for Caranthir and GQ only: 1350
  • XP per PC and henchman: 0

The pixie-wonderworker has the following limitations:

  • Half carrying capacity
  • Unable to use magical items larger than wands (ie, staffs)
  • Unable to wear any magical armor or clothing that hasn't been made for its size
  • Natural AC of 6, due to its size
  • Can cast invisibility/uninvisibility on itself at will, and casting spells and attacking won't break invisibility
  • Can fly 3 turns, rest 1 turn
  • Cannot use iron weapons, wands, armor, rings, etc.
  • XP progression is as follows:
    • 1: 5000
    • 2: 10000
    • 3: 20000
    • 4: 40000
    • 5: 80000
    • 6: 160000
    • 7: 320000
    • 8: 640000
    • 9: 830000
    • 10: 1020000
    • 11: 1210000
    • 12: 1400000
  • Otherwise, spell progression is the same as a Wonderworker
